DL1961 is a high-end denim label that you may have seen (or possibly shopped) at prestigious department stores, such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom as well as Selfridges and Harrods. But what you probably didn’t know is that the founders and directors of this phenomenal denim company are actually Pakistani.

Faisal Ahmed started the brand in New York City by combining the newest technology in denim with classic hand finished craftsmanship. The jeans are super sculpting and contain stretchable fibres, using XFIT LYCRA — a patented fabric. The jeans are also made using ethically sourced cotton, breathable botanic fibres and an energy efficient, sustainable process, which uses less water, waste and dye. ADM Denim, which is the parent company of DL1961, is located right here in Karachi!

Faisal’s older daughter and the creative powerhouse behind DL1961, Sarah Ahmed came on the Forbes list of ‘30 Under 30’ in 2018. In an interview to BeeHive, Sarah said denim runs in her blood. “I’ve grown up watching my family create products with it from our production mills in Pakistan.” For her own brand, Warp + Weft, a size inclusive denim brand, Sarah also uses the family’s production mills in Pakistan, which is committed to sustainable practices in order to reduce production’s impact on the environment.

“I think in this day and age, more and more people are wearing denim. It’s the new power dressing. They wear it to work, they wear it out, they wear it to relax. It’s a fabric with the power to hold you in, to make you feel comfortable, and to make you feel fashionable at the same time. It really is incredible. I’ve always associated denim with being the one garment in your closet you can wear in any situation.” she says.

So the next time you see these jeans on an international celebrity, take a moment to feel proud. Till then browse through your favourite style icons donning DL1961 with style!
