What Is The Law Of Attraction?

The law of attraction, a very popular philosophy, is thought to draw positive things to your life. The basis of this is manifestation – the idea that thoughts translate to energy. This philosophy entails that positive thoughts will bring positive outcomes and vice versa that negative thoughts bring negative outcomes. So, in short, the law of attraction means to attract into your life whatever you are focusing on. 

What Is The Law Of Attraction?

A good way to explain this philosophy would be “thoughts turn into things.” The ancient practice is built on the idea that whatever you actively concentrate on will happen in reality. Many people swear by it, and claim that positive energy can attract things like success in finances, relationships and health. On the other hand, constantly harbouring negative thoughts and energies can manifest real negative outcomes in your life. 

The Three Laws Of Attraction

Like attracts like

This suggests that similar things are attracted to each other. For example, positive thoughts tend to attract similarly positive things. This law focuses on the manifestation of your thoughts. In order for you to bring a thought into reality, you must be intentional with your thinking. Spiritual author Shannon Green says, “we are all like magnets, reflecting and attracting what we hold in our thoughts.”

Nature abhors a vacuum

This law is based on the notion that your mind cannot hold empty space, and that you either have positive or negative thoughts. It suggests that decluttering your mind and allowing more space for positive thoughts will be beneficial in actually bringing those thoughts to fruition, and drawing those things to you. 

The present is always perfect

The third law proposes that no matter what, there will always be something in your life that may bring you negative thoughts. Rather than dwelling on those thoughts, use your present moment to improve them. Thus, your energy will not be concentrated on dread or unhappiness, it will be focused on growth and improvement. However, this is not the same as toxic positivity where you don’t allow yourself to feel negative emotions – instead, it’s about bettering what you can and letting go of the rest.

Law of Attraction ≠ No need for hard work

When hearing about the Law of Attraction, people believe that they can manifest into their lives whatever they wish, and will not need to work for it. However, this is not the case. The Law of Attraction allows you to keep your goals in your mind; this acts as a booster to reinforce your goals, bringing you closer to your desired reality. When you start to believe your thoughts, they turn into words and actions that build your character and hence, determine your reality.

How To Practice It

This philosophy is used to create your own reality. Some ways to practice it are:

  • Visualise your life with your goals achieved / the future that you seek
  • Be grateful – whether in your mind or on paper. Make sure to check in with yourself every so often to be thankful for what you have
  • Use positive affirmations – speak your goals out loud  (e.g: “I want X, I am Y, I will achieve Z”)
  • Identify negative thinking and reframe it. Let go of what you cannot control and work towards changing what you can.

Tip: Try and make these tangible things – e.g for being grateful, write a gratitude journal. This will give you more visible reminders of what your aim is. 

Regardless of whether or not you believe in this philosophy, some of the key messages of the Law of Attraction would greatly benefit us if incorporated into our lives. For example, speaking positively to ourselves. These teachings can prove to be beneficial for your mental health, whether or not they truly work.
