Recently dry brushing has been causing quite a stir in the beauty world, where celebrities and skincare enthusiast alike, swear by its revolutionary benefits. It’s like the juice cleanse of the beauty world! Some even boldly claim it as a godsend that makes their skin smooth as butter. Who wouldn’t want that right?

Often in our skincare routine we spend long hours making sure our face and neck is pampered and taken care of, but neglect our poor bodies. It deserve your attention too, and this brush may just be your answer to smoother skin. Upon first sight this tool may look like a medieval torture device to you, but we assure you it’s not. Don’t worry – we have our detective goggles on to bring to you everything you need to know about this new trend!

What Is Dry Brushing?

As the name suggests, it’s a method where you brush your body, usually before the shower, and without any product or water. When dry brushing, the skin is typically brushed in circular motions, towards the heart, starting at the feet and hands and brushing toward the chest, usually going over each area two or three times. Experts suggest that dry brushing should be followed with a vitamin rich moisturizer for best results. Typically, the brushes used to do this have long, natural bristles that offer firm resistance against the skin. They come with or without the handle, based on user preference.

The Key Benefits:

1. Lymphatic Support

The lymphatic system is a major part of the body’s immune system. It is made up of organs and lymph nodes, ducts and vessels that transport lymph throughout the body while also carrying metabolic waste. The dry brushing technique stimulates the lymph system, helping the body get rid of toxins by increasing circulation and energy. Thus, making the skin plump and radiant in the short term! Word on the street is that people feel better after using it due to the toxin laden lymph being expunged, improving their general mood.

2. Exfoliation

The process of dry brushing with firm natural bristles loosens and eliminates dead skin cells, naturally exfoliating the skin! It takes away the dry, flakey skin layer, and makes way for new skin to regenerate. The added benefit being smaller and clean pores! Also, say goodbye to ingrowns forever! Though be mindful that it may feel really dry, if an extensive moisturizing routine isn’t followed with it.

3. Reduces Cellulite

This benefit however has dermatologists divided – some believe it helps while others aren’t so convinced. Cellulite is seen as a genetic condition and there is no scientific data proving that dry brushing reduces cellulite. However, ardent fans of the technique disagree and claim that this has helped reduce the appearance of cellulite. The logic behind it is that the skin plumping from the massage aspect of the technique, temporarily leads to an improvement in the appearance of cellulite. So though it doesn’t mean goodbye cellulite forever, it still helps with reducing the appearance of them.

Is It Suitable For Sensitive Skin?

As great as all the benefits may sound, like most things in life, there is no one size fit all way. For women with sensitive or eczema-prone skin stay far, far away from dry brushing, it is not for you!  It can cause irritation or over-drying of the skin while also causing major flare-ups in conditions like acne, rosacea and eczema. It’s too abrasive for these skin types, so if you have sensitive skin, it’s best to stick to gentle exfoliators to protect your skin.
