By The Auratnaak Movement is a ‘diverse collective of voices of resistance’, which was founded in 2016. Faiza Saleem coined the term ‘Auratnaak’ which is an intermix of the words, aurat and khatarnaak, and sets an appropriate tone for the platform. These witty and unapologetic women perform stand up comedy together in an industry that is mostly male dominated. Powerful and unfiltered, these women knock taboos and stereotypes out the window using comic relief as they convey their message across in a unique but diverse way – unafraid of judgment and backlash. Unfortunately, I have never been to their show, but I learned a lot about them through Maha Shafqat Khan, who attended and reviewed their show on The Nation. She ended her article by giving the reader insight on what to expect when you are part of the Auratnaak audience; as she wrote, “Not only did I leave the venue with a numb jaw but also with sore eyes given the amount of tears I shed while laughing my heart out. In millennial words, this group of avant-garde women truly “killed it.” The Auratanaak Instagram page is true to their humorist aesthetic.
