6 Ways To Make Your Beauty Routine Sustainable

The beauty industry is one of the largest consumer markets. Ask a girl where she spends most of her salary and she’d say — on the trendiest beauty products. After all, who could resist glamorous makeup and skincare products promising you the flawless skin of your dreams? But along with being an economically strong industry, it is also a huge contributor to environmental pollution. Sounds strange? Let us tell you how. Most beauty products contain elements such as plastic and chemicals that damage the environment, especially marine life. Don’t worry, we’re not asking you to give up your beauty routine, but only to switch to an eco-friendly one. Here are some simple ways you can help save the environment with a few tweaks to your beauty habits.

1. Ditch Makeup Wipes For Muslin Cloth

When it comes to removing all the makeup and grime off your face, makeup wipes seem to be the best bet. A few wipes and your face will be all clean. But do you know how much these wipes are damaging the environment? They take around 100 years to decompose. Makeup wipes are made of a combination of materials such as polyester, polypropylene, cotton, and rayon fibres, many of which are not biodegradable. A muslin cloth is a better alternative and can also remove makeup thoroughly.

2. Opt For Multi-Purpose Products

Let’s be honest — not all ‘must-have’ beauty products are worth splurging on. Not only many of them are a waste of money but also contribute to pollution. More products mean more packaging and hence, more waste. Instead, invest in double duty products or get creative with the existing ones. For instance, a lip stain can work as a blush as well and a shimmery eyeshadow can double as a highlighter.

3. Use Reusable Razors

If shaving is your go-to hair removal method and plastic razors the go-to tool, then sorry to break it to you, you could be harming the environment. Plastic razors aren’t the only option, as reusable, stainless steel razors are now becoming a popular choice. They may be a bit more expensive, but since they’re reusable, it’s a long-term investment that is also eco-friendly.

4. Change Your Shampoo

Whether in perfumes, moisturisers or shampoos, it is no secret that fragrances contain large amounts of hidden harmful chemicals. Sulphate and fragrance- free shampoos are all the rage these days and trust us, they’re much better than our usual shampoos. To save your hair as well as the environment, all you need to do is switch your shampoo.

5. Reuse The Bottles

If ditching your favourite and convenient products is not possible for you, then the least you can do is avoid wasting them. You may already know that empty jars and bottles can easily be reused. So bring your empty moisturiser pot to use by turning it into a travel-friendly jewellery container or decorate your fancy perfume bottles with flowers and use them as instagrammable vases.

6. Check The Packaging

Thanks to the numerous campaigns going on for an eco-friendly world, more and more brands are now shifting to safe packaging made from recycled materials. While buying your beauty products, check their packaging and look for the green recycle symbol. This small step of yours can help in saving Earth.
