For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Nargis: single, 20 something (a woman never reveals her age), and looking to have the best time around town. My best friend is Tina who I have been stuck with since our primary days – she might be featuring in a lot of my adventures, so might as well introduce her now (plus, I know she’s dying for a shoutout). My friends and family are constantly bugging me to share my ideas and opinions – naturally who else will give such great advice? So I thought what better time to start giving back to my community than right now. Today I am going to tell you about my first time seeing snow!
When I was a kid, I was fascinated by nature’s miracles: rainbows, storms, tornadoes, you name it – mujhe proper obsession thi in sab se. Now, you can probably imagine mujhe kitni excitement hui hogi the first time I saw snow!
One day, when I was about 10 years old, Tina and I went with our families to Bhurban in December. I had never experienced cold weather before – like seriously, mere liye it’s too cold even in Karachi jab thori si hawa chalti hai at Sea View during the winter time. Anyway, being a wide-eyed child with such a fondness for nature and such, I was incredibly excited for this trip. What made it even more special was that Tina was there as well (don’t tell her I said this though – no need for her to feel so important!).
Bhurban during the winter is an absolute vision! Breathtakingly beautiful with so much snowfall, and all those hills and trees. Honestly, I highly recommend visiting if you haven’t ever been.
When we first arrived in Bhurban, it was freezing cold, but there wasn’t any snow yet – baraf jaisi sardi thi but not actual baraf. We checked into our hotel and Tina and I started playing and exploring, as children do. After a long day of us running around and being silly, we went to bed exhausted. The next morning, I woke up feeling well rested and ready to take on the day. The first thing I did when I woke up was look out the window, and as soon as I did, my eyes widened in amazement and my heart started racing; snow! I could not believe what I was seeing! There was a thick blanket of pure white snow as far as I could see out my window. Everything was perfectly white and the hills were a dreamy shade of blue – it was truly one of those unforgettable, spectacular sights that stay with you forever.
I rushed to wake Tina up so she could witness this wonderful view with me, but of course woh itni sust aur neend mein thi that it was an immense struggle to get her out of bed. When I finally managed to get her up, she also became equally as excited at the sight of snow and we both had the biggest smiles plastered on our faces. We were itching to go outside and play in the snow; to touch it, feel it, smell it, to just lose ourselves in this magical white wonderland right outside our windows.
The adults were of course being overprotective and making sure we bundled up nice and warm so we wouldn’t get sick, and of course unko khush karne ke liye Tina and I were being very obedient little girls so that nothing would stand in the way of us going out to play in the snow. Finally, we stepped outside, wearing pata nahi kitne layers of clothing, and Tina and I spent the entire day running around, laying in the snow, throwing snowballs, making a snowman – all the typical “mein ne pehle kabhi baraf nahi dekhi hai” things that one does.
But as much as I loved the snow and have such fond memories of my first time seeing it, I am a warm weather girl through and through. Ab mujhe baraf waghera movies aur pictures mein hi acha lagta hai, because in real life, nothing makes me happier than Karachi’s coastal warm breezes.
