We are constantly learning throughout life – it’s one of the beauties of it. But our 20s are when we have experiences that go on to cement the way we view things later in life. For one of our followers, Maha Noor, the 20s were a time she learnt many things. Scroll down to read 20 things she learnt during this decade of her life – maybe they can be valuable lessons for you too!
1. Self growth is important: You are constantly evolving as an individual. Open your mind to see new perspectives and respect different schools of thoughts. Allow yourself to change opinions on certain subjects after getting better enlightenment.
2. Nothing in this world is too good for you: If you miss out on an opportunity, your life doesn’t end. Several other doors will be opened for you. You have got one life and you shouldn’t allow regretful emotions to take control.
3. Your feelings are valid: Things won’t go away if you suppress your feelings; you are allowed to feel and express a range of emotions. It’s very human to feel dejected, angry and anxious at times – allow yourself to face your emotions rather bottling them up.
4. Fall in love with yourself, but it’s okay if it takes time to get there: The journey to self acceptance is long and hard. It takes a good amount of time to finally embrace and appreciate our real selves so don’t feel pressure to get there – it’ll only make it take longer. Let the process happen organically.
5. Your heart always contains room for love: You might feel unworthy or think you don’t have enough love to offer, but it’s not true!
6. Rejection is inevitable: Growing up we are never taught that there might be failures, and that you will hear no more than yes. That’s why when we face rejection, it seems like the end of the world. But remember, it happens to the best of us and no amount of rejection is an indication that we are failing at life, rather it’s a chance for self development and growth.
7. Your friends need space and it’s okay: Give your friends the freedom to create a life of their own that doesn’t necessarily involve you is important. Their lives don’t have to revolve around you and it doesn’t mean they love you any less.
8. You won’t always get the closure: People drift apart – sometimes without any explanation. Moving forward might seem hard, but time heals everything and it will heal you as well.
9. Invest in your future: Save money. Take internships, do part time jobs and look for freelancing options. Take risks and try to make time for learning useful skills. Your future self deserves this hustle.
10. Forgive your parents: Try to make peace with the fact that they are humans like you who do make mistakes and it’s all right. Forgive them and re-establish your relationship with them.
11. Nobody has all the right answers: Everybody’s formula to success or a perfect life is different. You will figure out what you want to do in life and how to get there, in your own time. It’s okay if your journey doesn’t match someone else’s.
12. There is enough room for all of us: People around you might taste success before you – it’s okay to stand up and clap for them. Their success doesn’t mean you are a failure. There is enough room for everyone.
13. Writing is therapeutic: Write down your achievements and the things you are grateful for. Write about you like you are comforting a friend and read these things whenever you feel low.
14. Change your perspective: Life is all about the way you look at things. If you choose to focus on the negatives of a situation, they are likely to hold you down. It might be easier said than done, but try changing your perspective and you will see life from a new angle. Plus remember, we give most things in life a lot more weight than they deserve; half the things we are stressed about are worse in our head than they are in reality.
15. Never take your youth and health for granted: Take care of your mental and physical health. Go on walks, practice meditation, read books and liberate your mind.
16. Keep a check on your loved ones and yourself: Be a good listener. Check up on your friends and family, but also don’t be afraid to reach out when you yourself feel the need to talk.
17. Life is tough but you are tougher: You will have to get through some difficult moments of your life alone, but you are stronger than you think. You will get through it, even if it seems difficult initially.
18. Always be the hardest working person in the room: There are no shortcuts to the road of success, and there’s no such thing as perfect jobs. You will always have to work hard even after landing your dream job. So while you are at it, be the hardest working person in any room and you will never be replaced.
19. Insecure people will try to dim your light: People will try to pull you down by projecting their own insecurities on to you. But the people who are doing better than you in life will never do this. Remember that.
20. You do not need to associate age with your goals: It’s okay to get a masters degree at 25 or to consider changing majors. It’s never too late and you aren’t too old. It’s okay to alter career paths or upgrade your goals. And if you haven’t accomplished your goals yet, it doesn’t mean you will never achieve them. You will get there if you work hard. Hang in there.
