How To Switch Up Your Eid Feast

For many of us, Eid is about gathering with our loved ones and eating together, but given the current circumstances, it doesn’t seem likely that we’ll be able to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha like we usually do. And while that puts a damper on things, it’s important to strive forward and take the opportunity to celebrate whenever we can during these stressful times. So, here are a couple of ways you can spice up your quarantine Eid feast:

Make It Into A Picnic

If the weather allows, why not venture outside for your Eid feast? Whether you go out to a park or simply step out into your garden, the change of space is bound to lift your mood. Consider packing up some gear for outdoor activities – like a frisbee or a cricket bat and ball – along with food and get your family moving around after a heavy Eid meal!

Plan An Eid Food Exchange

The concept is pretty easy – pick a family member, friend or even a neighbour, and ask them to send you over a dish on Eid and you’ll do the same in return. The twist to it is that neither party knows what they’re getting. It’s a simple way to add a little more excitement (and suspense) to your Eid day, and still have your loved ones be a part of it, even if it’s not in person.

Bring Out the BBQ

Get the grill out (or borrow one from a friend) and hold an Eid BBQ outside. BBQs are a good way to get everyone involved in the cooking fun, from the meal prep to the actual grilling, and it’s a great alternative if you’re not feeling the traditional Eid menu items this year.

Switch Up The Traditional Desi Menu

Eid is a global celebration meaning there are lots of traditional Eid dishes you can try from different cultures! You can play it safe with just a dessert like Maamoul, the yummy shortbread cookies stuffed with various nuts, dates or figs mostly eaten in Levantine countries or take a gamble with a main entree like Tajine, a slow-cooked stew with meat and vegetables made in North-African countries. The options are endless.

Cook Together

More than anything, Eid is about spending time with your loved ones, so why not get the whole family involved in the cooking process? Each family member can take responsibility for one dish and you can even turn it into a cooking competition to add a little bit more fun to the whole process.
