Lies The Beauty Industry Has Convinced Us To Believe

Fair is lovely, youth is eternal and only slim is attractive. These are some of the many beauty clichés that we’ve been brainwashed into believing. There’s no harm in following beauty trends as long as they make you happy. But when chasing perfection becomes an obsession because of society’s unrealistic standards of beauty, it’s a problem. It’s time to wake up and defy these stereotypes. Here are some lies you’ve been fed and should completely disregard!

1. You’re Not Perfect If You Don’t Look Like The Girls On Magazines

Fashion and beauty magazines have convinced women, particularly young girls, that they always need to look perfect. But allow us to burst that bubble – there is no such thing as perfection! Nobody is perfect and chasing after something unattainable is unhealthy. People love you for who you are, not what you are.

2. Your Complexion Defines You

As if unwanted opinions on how to achieve fair skin weren’t enough, beauty brands and their gora complex made things much worse. They’ve persuaded women into believing they need to be fair to succeed in life, professionally or personally. South Asia’s obsession with fair skin is an extremely damaging mindset. Your worth is not defined by the colour of your skin, so please don’t harm it by bleaching and using fairness creams. Love your skin and be proud in it – those who judge you or hinder your growth are not worth your time.

3. Ageing Is A Curse

According to some research, the Global Cosmetic Surgery Market is expected to be valued at US$ 21.97 billion by the end of 2023. Women around the world are being convinced to get under the knife or get injections to avoid wrinkles and look younger. But here’s the thing: ageing is not a curse! It’s the most natural process of life and one you cannot control! Each age has it’s own beauty and we should accept ourselves, no matter the age! Age gracefully and you’ll never regret a day in your life.

4. Your Appearance Matters More Than Your Health

As long as you’re healthy and fit, what size you are shouldn’t matter. If you’re constantly scrolling through your Instagram feed envying Victoria’s Secret models, it’s time to unfollow that behaviour. It’s more important for you to think about your health rather than obsessing over being thin. We live in a day and age where being a size 0 is not, and should not, define your self-worth or beauty. Focus on your health; you’ll be better for it!

5. Clear Skin Is The Only Perfect Skin

We all hate the zits on our faces, the pigmentation of our skin and the dreaded dark circles under our eyes. Unfortunately, the beauty industry has led us believe we look horrible if we don’t have flawless skin. But it’s normal for our skin to change its texture time and again. A lot of the changes in your skin are a result of hormonal changes and there’s no reason anyone should ever skin-shame you for something you can’t control. Let your skin breathe – it’ll thank you!
