If you’re looking for an exercise that’s lots of fun and will whip you into shape as well, swimming is the perfect fit for you. Swimming has several health benefits but the only red flag is the chlorine-loaded pool. While your body will thank you, your skin and hair won’t – the chlorine can cause dryness, itchiness and even inflammation. However, we have a pre and post skincare routine that will help keep your skin flawless even after swimming for hours. Here’s what you need to do!
Before Swimming:
1. Take A Quick Shower
As bizarre as it may sound, taking a quick shower before dipping into the pool is compulsory at public pools and is hygienic as well. Wet your hair and skin properly – the more hydrated they are, the less chlorinated water they’ll absorb.
2. Apply Some SPF
Applying sunscreen is a must, whether you’re swimming or not. But it’s even more important before you swim! Not only will it protect you from the sun, it’ll form a protective barrier on your skin, which will keep the chlorine from drying out your skin. A pre-swimming lotion is the best option as it’s specially formulated to block chlorine. Slather on some SPF at least 15 minutes before jumping into the pool, so the sunblock has enough time to absorb into your skin.
3. Hydrate, Hydrate And Hydrate!
Hydration is key to all skincare routines, and it’s no different when swimming. You may not feel thirsty, but take a water bottle with you to the pool and keep sipping every 15-20 minutes to make sure you’re hydrated.
After Swimming:
4. Go for A Warm Shower
Once you’re out of the pool, take a quick, warm shower immediately. Warm water will help relax your body after the swim. Invest in an anti-chlorine soap if you’re a regular swimmer and wash your hair and body thoroughly. Finish off with a rinse of cool water to tighten up the pores.
5. Moisturise
Moisturising is the most essential part of a swimmers’ skincare routine. To retain all that moisture in the skin, apply a deep, nourishing moisturiser as soon as you’re out the shower. Use a lotion that has ceramides and alpha hydroxy acid to hydrate your skin and help restore its pH balance. And don’t skimp out! Make sure to moisturise every inch of your body, especially your cuticles and areas where the skin is thinnest such as elbows, backs of your hands, shoulders and under the eyes.
6. Have A Cup Of Herbal Tea
We already know how beneficial herbal tea is for the skin. It’s rich in antioxidants, which helps relieve the stress of oxidative damage on your skin. Green and moringa tea is highly recommended to restore your skin to its natural glow!
