Grandparents are the ones that babysat us when we were kids, snuck us dessert when our parents wouldn’t give us any, and spoiled us beyond all belief. The love you get from a grandparent is so particular. It’s the combination of their wisdom and boundless love that make us feel safe in a way that is entirely different to the kind of love we get from our parents. Unfortunately, it’s also the kind of bond that wanes as we enter our teens. Our grandparents get older, and our priorities change a little. You’re not the only grandchild out there that’s guilty about neglecting their grandparents — we’re all in the same boat. It’s about balance though! There’s nothing more important than family, and spending time with them or making them feel special doesn’t have to be a grand production. There’s joy in the simple things. If you know you can’t visit as often as you’d like, here’s how to make the most out of meeting your grandparents.
1. Cook For Them
There’s something about food cooked with love that makes it taste so much better. Remember how you always ran to your grandmother whenever you craved your favourite meal? It’s time to reverse the roles! Now it’s your turn to cook them their favourite food. There’s nothing better than enjoying a meal together. If you manage to get everyone into the kitchen to cook with you, even better!
2. Play A Board Game
Nothings beats an epic game night with your grandparents. Not only is it super fun, but helps you relive your childhood days. It also creates the perfect environment for some amazing conversations. So before your next visit, dig out your monopoly board, Uno deck, or scrabble box, and put your game face on.
3. Watch Their Favourite Movie
Grandparents love going back to the days of youth, and making you experience what those days might have been like too. They enjoy it even more if they have someone special to reminisce their golden days with. Movies are the best time machines. Surprise them by playing them their favourite movies from when they were younger!
4. Take A Trip Down Memory Lane With Old Photographs
The blurry pictures that are hidden away in dusty old photo albums are great ways to reconnect with your grandparents. Those albums are chock full of memories. Dig through the back of your closet, pull out that box of nostalgia, and listen to them recall the most precious moments of your childhood with you.
5. Go For A Walk With Them
Taking care of their health is the best way to express your love for them! A walk in the park will boost their energy, and also be a great opportunity for you to spend some quality time with your grandparents. The best stories are shared while taking a walk with someone, so there’s no way you’ll get bored at all.
6. Take Goofy Photos
Bring them into this century and introduce them to the crazy world of Instagram and selfies! Take loads of silly photos with them, the same way you would with your friends. After all, grandparents are our best friends for life!
