7 Waxing Myths That Are Totally Absurd

Everyone has their favourites when it comes to hair removal. Some people advocate hair removal creams, and other people stick to razors at home. Some are painless, and others not so much. Hair removal in itself is never a painless procedure, with ingrown hairs and cuts and burns always an unforgivingly real possibility. What gets the worst rep out of them all is waxing! Even after our old relationship with waxing, there are some deep rooted misconceptions in every girls mind that make them second guess their wax appointments.  Will it harm the skin underneath? Will the hair grow back thicker? These are just some of the questions that pop up in every womans mind. We’re here to debunk some widely believed waxing myths for you.

1. Start Waxing Young To Reduce Hair Growth Later

Whether it’s waxing, shaving, sugaring or another method, nothing guarantees permanent hair removal. Laser is your best bet if that’s what you’re after. Depending on your skin type, getting waxed frequently may reduce the overall appearance of hair over the years, but for most, waxing doesn’t make much of a difference.

2. Waxing Causes Hair To Grow Back Thicker

Regular waxing can drastically change the structure of your hair, but in a good way. Contrary to popular belief, while the hair will still grow back in the same amount, the quality will be softer and thinner after waxing. It’s because of the exfoliating nature of this particular hair removal technique.

3. Waxing Causes Wrinkles And Sagging

Waxing in no way contributes to wrinkles or sagging skin in any area. Besides natural ageing, wrinkles are most commonly a result of the skin being constantly exposed to elements like the sun. The skin around the eyes or upper lip is especially delicate and is more prone to signs of ageing than other areas. This often leads to the misconception that sagging skin in these areas is due to waxing, but the actual act can in no way cause premature wrinkles.

4. Waxing Harms The Skin

Waxing, especially when done with hot wax, may cause redness or inflammation. It’s only short-term though! These side effects disappear within hours. Waxing does no severe, long term harm to the skin.

5. Your Hair Should Be Long To Get Waxed

To achieve a smooth finish after waxing, the ideal length of the hair should be about 1/4 inch to 1/2 an inch. One reason people prefer to wax longer hair is to prevent the hair from getting plucked out by the root, which is possible with shorter hair. If the hair is too long, waxing can be more painful as well, which is something to keep in mind!

6. Waxing Prevents Ingrown Hair

Waxing can to some extent reduce the existence of ingrown hair, but it cannot prevent it completely. In fact, no hair removal method can stop it. As some people are more prone to ingrown hair, it be a reoccurring issue. To find out some tried and tested ways to get rid of ingrown hair click here.

7. Waxing Doubles As Exfoliation

Though waxing does remove dead skin cells, it’s not a perfect replacement for exfoliation. Like any other hair removing method, exfoliating before and after waxing is highly recommended as it helps prevent bumps and ingrown hairs.
