Here’s How The Clothes You Wear Affect Your Mind

When putting together an outfit all we think about is picking something that’ll flatter us. But our sartorial choices actually have a greater impact on our mind than one would think. Science suggests that our clothing affects our behaviour, attitudes, personality, mood, confidence, as well as the way we interact with others. Intrigued? Scroll through to learn exactly how clothes can influence your mind – this will be helpful when you want to impress at your next date or boardroom meeting.

Power Suits Make You Feel Powerful

It’s called a power suit for a reason. Wearing power clothing can make you feel more confident and dominant. In a research conducted by Social Psychological and Personality Science, some participants were made to wear formal business clothes while others were casually dressed. Results showed that those in suits felt much more powerful and in control than those dressed informally.

Casual Wear Boosts Your Creativity

A classy suit may be a good idea for a board meeting, but when it’s time to get creative– put on your favourite jeans and tee! A casual dress code helps you be more friendly and creative – also, the more relaxed you are, the better you’ll feel. This is why most creative agencies have a relaxed dress code while corporations require formal dressing.

Gym Clothes Can Convince You To Exercise

Need motivation to workout? According to researchers, you may want to invest in gym clothes. Surprisingly (or not), fitness wear actually encourages you to workout. “I think it would make sense that when you wear athletic clothing, you become more active and more likely to go to the gym and workout,” says Hajo Adam, a Northwestern University researcher. Those looking to finally start that healthy lifestyle, take note.

Uniforms Make A Difference

Clothing that’s associated with a specific role or duty is proven to not just make you look smarter, but can even help you think smart. In a study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, researchers gave lab coats to a group of people who were not doctors and asked them to perform a series of challenging tasks. The result showed that people in lab coats made fewer mistakes than those in regular clothes. For the second round, all the participants were given white coats but some were told that it was a doctor’s coat while others were told it was paint smocks. Again, those in doctor’s coats performed better.

Colours Say A Lot

The colours you wear truly affect your mind like no other! In 2013, a study published in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology examined the effects of the colour red on athletes. Athletes of the same built, strength and age were asked to compete with each other in different situations. Half of them wore red and the other half wore blue. The study found that athletes in red had higher heart rates during the match and also lifted heavier weights than their blue opponents. This proves that the colour of your clothes influences your mind and physical ability.

Your Favourite Outfit Can Cheer You Up

Repeating clothes is always in fashion and especially if they are your favourite. Whether it’s wearing something you’ve gotten complimented for in the past or something you just love wearing, that one outfit can uplift you and make you feel happier. If you’re comfortable wearing something you’ll also be less bothered about how you look.
